I saw a BBC program the other day which ties into this very well.

Apparently this is something google do to "make our browsing experience more enjoyable"; what they do is they store all your old searches and then create added that they think might interest you.

I don't remember the name of the program but when I do I'll post so you guys can watch it (it was really quite good).

I use http://www.startpage.com

They even have a proxy.
