Who am I???
« on: April 14, 2010, 10:48:45 AM »

Okay, I don't know about anyone else but I'm always confused when someone asks this sort of question. I'm confused how you even start to discover "who I am" let alone know the answer to it. lol. I'm doing a fair amount of "soul searching" right now and this question pisses me off...I don't even know where the fuck to start it. lol.

What sort of bollocks question is this? It's meant to make you calm and it only pisses me off. lol.

Who am I and who are you?

How far do you want to go? I began the search for myself by writing out a complete moral inventory of myself, (this method is used by some self help groups). It needed to be completely honest, reveling not only my positive attributes but probably more importantly the negative ones. I spent month's writing this out.Than categorizing the list and uncovering the patterns of my life. You have heard the phrase "you are what you eat" well I am what my actions show me to be. Armed with this knowledge I have a baseline for who I am and continue through life to tweek the things I want to be...
As for "who am I"  I'm just a construct of the many lives I've lived before, searching for Karmic balance and working my way toward enlightenment one Earthbound lifetime at a time.

I'll start writing that out, there is going to be a really long list of negative things I think. I take it that given it's "self-discovery" that I can't ask others for their opinion?  :-\

Then categorizing the list and uncovering the patterns of my life.

What sort of patterns do you mean?

My first question "How far do you want to go" was a little misleading and I apologize. If there is one absolute I have learned in life I would have to say that would be that things are always changing, so to say that I know myself I guess I need to add as well as I can for today. On your second point others opinions of me are extremely critical to my "self-discovery". I typically require several individuals input before deciding how to interpret that information. The way I look at it is that the mind that creates the problem, has a more difficult time resolving it. In other words something (a character defect or such)that might be obvious to say a friend may be hard for me to see in myself. So I listen to others with an open mind and apply what fits. Lastly on patterns. I guess a good example would be mistakes I have made over and over. Am I generally helpful to people or do I tend to keep to my own? Am I loyal as a friend? The way I did my inventory, I took the things that stuck out in my mind from my entire life, that story about when I was two my Aunt Mary baby sat me for a day and I thought that my parents had left me. Later in life my family left me home alone while they went out of town a short vacation. To me the fact that these things stick out in my mind suggest that I might have abandonment issues. I'm really not whining( lol  :)) just attempting to give an example of what a pattern might look like. In the end it is also suggested that we share this inventory with another human being, one that we trust will be able to keep what we share in ultimate confidence. Without that assurance it is difficult to get out all the dirty little secrets that are a part of who we are. When I did it we did it in a ceremonial fashion outdoors, campfire, sunrise the whole nine. It's was very freeing.
Soeey for being so long winded.

I do believe we have a twelve stepper within our midst.  So long as everyone remembers, there is no thirteenth step here. ;)

I like the Popeye philosophy, I am...sounds sorta biblical to me too...I am...Remember that Moses conversation with one of his gods?  The answer was "I am"?

For me the problem comes in when I allow words to define.  I can't describe myself with mere symbols.  Language, especially English, constrains and imprisons thought.  To apply mere symbols such as words to a living human entity is impossible.  It is like trying to apply words to the Way/Tao...Impossible.  What is is, how another views it is what it is to them, etc.  Again, this language that I use to attempt to explain my thoughts is very weak.  But, such is the limitation of this form of communication.  Art and artists attempt to rise above this language limitation, to only find new limitations.

Lashy, to me you'll be defined as Lashy.  It doesn't describe you, it may associate you with perceptions I have about you, but that is as far as that could possibly go.  You are, outside of words or symbols.  You, as we all are, are something that is beyond words, art, description, etc.  You are, I am, that's it.  I like to believe that we're all an aspect of divinity, but how does One encapsulate God with mere words or concepts?
