May I ask a stupid question (or two or three) here?

I'll preface it with, I think it'd be fun to find shiny gold stuff in the water.  I love nature, and that'd be a great excuse to be out in her.  I like the color.  I imagine it'd be like fishing.

Some claim gold to be of value when it comes to trade.

If gold is "valuable", then why?  What do you do with it?  What does it do?  I know it looks pretty, but beyond that, what does gold do?

I can't eat gold, but I have had gold shlogger (sp?).  Yet, I can eat dandelions, nettles and blackberries.  Why is gold beyond that?  I've never understood that.  I guess I'm like a two year old, if I can't put it in my mouth, it ain't worth it.   Then again, didn't the old miners chomp on gold to tell if it was real or not?

I get the being out in nature and panning, but I question the reason for the goal.  Can ya'll enlighten me please?

I agree, gold is pretty useless really. The only reason it's worth anything is because back in the pre-new-world days there wasn't a lot of it and because the noblemen had all the money they could afford to show off and have rings and such made out of it. Its the same all the way back in time, even before the Greeks and Romans, there wasn't a lot of gold and their wasn't a lot of colour in everyday life (no dyes other than red, yellow, purple and a few other colours) so gold added a lot of colour into the world.

Todays value of gold comes from that, why it still retains it's value is beyond me though.

This is the simple form of capitalism, you have something I want, we agree to exchange goods for that commodity that I want.  But, it is all under agreement, AKA contract.

Now, I am a Capitalist, I wish our countries would try it some time.  Since government is inherently evil and we'll never be "allowed" to be Human, in the mean time, it is up to us, the People/Humans of the World to fix this mess.

Gold is only valuable because we as human`s made it that way....
For instance what if it would have been copper or aluminum we took a fancy to before we found gold, then it would be worth more than gold, it`s all what we make it, we set the market and standard of what`s got worth to it.... Don`t you think ??

It's just a hobby for fun for us. In Ohio, there really isn't enough gold deposites from the glacier's here. It's just fun for us. The Rocky Mountian's are a good place to go in you really want to find any. It is amazing how far back gold got it's value. For instance, King Tut. His tomb was packed with gold. It would make a interesting investagation into where gold gained its popularity and use.

Me and Regnad have been watching the cable show "Gold Rush: Alaska". What a joke. These guys are idiots. Being familiar with prospecting, these guys don't know much about it. or the tools to run matirial. It has been nothing but a soap opera so far. Regnad said he doesnt even want to watch it anymore. lol.
    Can't wait till spring...........
